Mentoring vs Coaching
When it comes to one-on-one support and guidance, mentoring and coaching are usually the two most confused relationship figures.
"What's the difference?" is usually the first question that pops into most people's heads. Mentoring and coaching are, in fact, two distinctly different approaches that can uniquely help you set your goals and reach your full potential, as an individual and as a successful leader.
At True Course Ministries, your experienced professional will help you further understand the difference and determine whether mentoring or coaching or a combination of both best meet your individual needs.
True Course Mentoring is an intentional process designed to develop the individual as a whole. Learning techniques are facilitated through the relationship with an actively interested, and helpful professional who is able to offer related experience from their own life and work. Sessions consist of interactive, face-to-face conversations in a non-judgmental, welcoming environment conducive for reflection, growth, and productive dialogue.
True Course Coaching is designed to help individuals make specific changes as they learn to deal with uncertain situations, make wiser decisions, set higher goals, and identify hindrances that challenge their productivity and personal achievements. The knowledge that the answer already exists within the individual is the cornerstone of the coaching approach. An enthusiastic, motivating professional is able to help the individual realize this fact as they learn to answer their own questions through critical reflection and the development of a strategic plan of action.
The Difference is in the Details
Purpose
- Mentoring seeks to help the individual incorporate lessons learned vicariously from the mentor's own experience in order to develop the leadership and personal habits that are needed for ongoing effectiveness and required to reach their long-term goals.
- Coaching focuses on helping the individual surface solutions and formulate action plans for both immediate and long-term success.
Method
- Mentoring is based on personal, face-to-face relationship. Phone and email are available, optional ways to achieve growth, but they are considered supplementary to the regular interaction with your True Course professional in person.
- Coaching values a face-to-face relationship, but its goals can also be successfully achieved through phone or email dialogue.
Your Professional
Both mentors and coaches at True Course Ministries have experienced highs and lows, joys and disappointments, and the challenges of life and leadership that are all formative building blocks of a seasoned, growing, and thriving life.
More specifically...
- A mentor is highly trained in adult education and an experienced professional in both the ministry and volunteer organizations who is trained to help develop the whole person.
- A coach has received coaching-specific training, and is involved in continuing coaching education in order to help individuals realize their own potential.
Time Frame
- The gold standard for the True Course mentoring experience's duration is two years, enabling you to establish a solid foundation, learn, grow, and practice principles determined with your mentor. (Varied durations are available according to individual needs).
- A True Course coaching experience ranges from one month to unlimited, ongoing sessions, depending on your specific situation's complexity and desired growth
