The True Course Ministries learning experience is based on the principles of "andragogy", the art and science of helping adults learn.

Known as the father of adult education in the United States, Malcolm S. Knowles’ methods pioneered and established foundational assumptions for adult education. These assumptions emphasize that in order to provide a powerful learning experience, adult educators must recognize that adult learners have the potential to be self-directed in their learning, and they should promote a continuous environment of support and confidence in the learner’s abilities.

Adult educators should include learning experiences that value and incorporate the life experiences of the learners; create learning experiences that are relevant to their every day responsibilities, in personal application and problem-solving potential. Additionally, the adult educator should capitalize on internal values rather than external incentives to motivate the learner, and ensure that the learner wholly understands why particular opportunities for growth and various situations may be important and valuable.
